The petroleum sludge is attributed to two major factors controlling its formation. The first factor is the inorganic residue (sediments, sands, scales and dust) and the second is the precipitation of paraffinic wax. Wax precipitates are sparingly soluble in crude oil. The reason behind this precipitation is temperature changes. In addition to the above reasons, the oxidation of heavy organic material in crude oil due to climate changes and oxidizing fungi. Moreover, the interruption in material balance due to losses of volatile components and the tendency of asphaltene, bitumen, resins and polymeric compounds to precipitate are all causes of sludge formation.
